Wheels & Tires for Golf Carts

Most stock carts roll on 8-inch wheels, and you can usually step up to a 10-inch wheel (about a 20-inch overall tire) with no other changes. A 12-inch wheel sometimes clears a stock cart, but many 22–23-inch combos on 12s need a mild 3–4-inch lift to stop rubbing at full steering lock. Going to 14-inch (a ~23-inch tire) means a 6-inch lift on most carts, and 15-inch is lifted-carts-only. "Rims" and "wheels" mean the same thing — a wheel is the rim plus its mounting center. On most carts, yes — plan on a 6-inch lift. A 14-inch wheel with a ~23-inch tire won't clear the body and fenders at full steering lock without one; running that setup on only a 3–4-inch lift is the classic cause of rubbing. A few low-profile 14-inch setups fit smaller lifts, but that's the exception and depends on the exact tire diameter and your cart. On a fully stock cart, a 10-inch wheel with a tire up to about 20 inches overall is the safe ceiling. All-terrain tires have a deeper, more open tread for grass, dirt, gravel, and light off-road use — great grip off pavement, a little louder and firmer on a smooth road. Street tires have a shallower, smoother tread for lower rolling resistance and a quieter, softer ride on pavement, trading away off-road bite. Pick all-terrain if you cross grass or trails, street if you mostly stay on cart paths and roads. Many street tires are DOT-rated if you're building a street-legal cart; confirm the DOT stamp on the specific tire.

A combo is a wheel and tire already mounted, balanced, and matched as a set, so it bolts straight onto your cart — no sourcing a wheel and a tire separately and hoping the offset and diameter line up. Combos take the guesswork out of fitment and are usually the simplest way to change your cart's look and stance in one step. Buy separates only if you're keeping your current tires and just want new wheels, or vice versa. Going bigger? A combo also makes it easy for us to flag whether you'll need a lift.

A little, yes. A taller tire raises your effective gearing, which can nudge top speed up slightly but makes the motor work harder from a stop and can trim your range per charge — more so on hills or with a heavier load. The effect is modest for a mild size bump and larger for a big jump in tire diameter; on a stock motor and controller, oversized heavy tires can also add heat. If maximum range matters, keep the size increase moderate or ask us about a controller or motor setup suited to bigger tires.
