What does a speed controller actually do?+

The controller is the brain of an electric cart — it takes the throttle signal and modulates how much power reaches the motor, so most of how your cart "feels" (smooth vs. jerky, strong vs. weak off the line) comes from the controller. When a cart loses power, cuts out, or throws speed-related fault codes, the controller is a prime suspect. It's also the single biggest lever for a performance upgrade.

How do I match a replacement controller to my cart?+

Three specs have to match, not just one. Voltage (36V / 48V / 72V) must match your pack. Current rating — both continuous and peak amps — has to suit your motor and how hard you drive. And motor type is non-negotiable: a DC series controller will not run a SepEx or an AC motor, and vice versa. Getting voltage right but motor type wrong is the most expensive mistake here, so confirm your drive system before ordering.

Should I get an OEM-style replacement or an upgrade controller?+

If your cart runs fine and the stock controller just failed, an OEM-equivalent replacement returns you to factory performance. If you want more torque, more top speed, or programmable tuning, an upgrade controller (for example an Alltrax SR/AXE on a DC series cart) delivers higher amps and adjustability. Upgrades pair best with adequate cabling and often a heavy-duty solenoid — a 400A+ controller can outrun stock supporting parts.

Are these controllers programmable?+

Most modern controllers are — they expose top speed, acceleration rate, regen rate, and throttle response, but you need a programming interface to change them: a handheld (like a Curtis 1313) or a USB cable and software (Alltrax), or a dedicated Navitas programmer/Bluetooth module for Navitas units.
