FAQs for Chargers
What's the difference between an onboard and an offboard charger?+
Onboard chargers are mounted inside the cart and you just plug a cord into the wall; offboard (portable) chargers are a separate box that plugs into your cart's charge port. Which one you replace with depends on how your cart is set up now — look at whether your charging hardware lives in the cart or sits on the garage floor. Either way, the electrical rules below (voltage, chemistry, connector) are what actually determine fitment, not the form factor.
How do I match a charger to my batteries?+
Three things have to line up. First, pack voltage — 36V, 48V, or 72V must match exactly; a 36V charger on a 48V pack won't complete a cycle and a 72V charger on a 48V pack can damage it. Second, chemistry — flooded lead-acid, AGM, and lithium (LiFePO4) each need the right charge profile. Third, amp output: a 15–20A charger is fine for overnight charging, while a higher-amp unit recharges a large pack faster — the trade-off is mostly charge time, and a higher-amp charger won't hurt a capable pack because the battery's BMS limits how much current it actually accepts. Match the amp output to how quickly you need the cart back in service.
What connector or plug do I need?+
Golf cart charge plugs are not universal, and the style is cart-specific. Common ones: Crowsfoot (Club Car DS pre-1995 36V), PowerWise (EZGO TXT 36V, pre-2009), 3-pin (EZGO TXT 48V, 2010+), PowerDrive (Club Car 1995+, Precedent, Tempo), Anderson SB-50 (common on lithium conversions), and the round Yamaha OEM plug (G-series). Lithium conversions often swap the connector — frequently to an SB-50 — so check the actual port on your cart rather than assuming from the year. If the plug doesn't match, you can order the charger with the right plug, use an adapter pigtail, or replace the cart-side receptacle.
Can I use a lead-acid charger on lithium batteries (or the other way around)?+
No — and this one matters. A lead-acid charger on a lithium pack chronically undercharges it (it tops out around 80–85%), which slowly kills the pack over time. A lithium charger on lead-acid overcharges it, causing gassing, electrolyte loss, and a real safety risk. The exception is a profile-switchable charger (like the Lester Summit Series II) set to the correct chemistry before its first plug-in. If you're switching chemistries or aren't sure which profile you're on, call us at 678-331-7404 and we'll confirm the right charger before you buy.
How is this different from the Batteries & Chargers collection?+
This collection is standalone chargers and charger-side parts — the charger itself, plus cords and receptacles — for when your pack is still good but the charger (or its plug) failed, when you want a faster-charging unit, or when a lithium conversion changed your connector. The Batteries & Chargers hub pairs battery packs and chargers together, which is where to start if you're replacing the whole power system at once. Shop here when the batteries stay and only the charger changes.
